There are approximately 30 species of this plant, although Acanthus mollis and Acanthus spinosus are the more common garden specimens. This plant is a striking perennial that is often used as a specimen plant with tall spikes of veined pink-mauve and white hooded flowers protruding from purple bracts. The foliage is attractive shiny deep green with a spiny, thistle like appearance. It can be aggressive in light soil. The leaves of A. mollis are broader and softer than those of Acanthus spinosa.
